Art and Walking takes place on Sunday 28 October 2012 and is part of the National Trust’s Great British Walk. It’s a unique and exciting opportunity for the public to experience a relaxed walk through Birmingham whilst appreciating great art.

The day starts at the Barber Institute of Fine Arts, where people can discover how walking inspired many artists of the Romantic era, including Thomas Fearnley, focus of the Barber’s current exhibition In Front of Nature: The European Landscapes of Thomas Fearnley. This will be followed by an autumnal stroll along a scenic stretch of the Birmingham canal to the Brindleyplace, at the heart of the city’s entertainment and cultural district. The next stop is the Ikon Gallery (Birmingham’s leading contemporary art gallery) for Sunday lunch, followed by a tour of the fascinating exhibitions, Yael Bartana: And Europe Will Be Stunned and Arefin & Arefin: The graphic design of Tony Arefin.

Robert Wenley, Acting Director of the Barber Institute of Fine Arts, said: ‘Our major exhibition, “In Front of Nature”, features many beautiful works by an artist who walked around Europe, including England, in the 19th century to find inspiration for his stunning landscape paintings.  It seems natural to highlight this historic link between art and walking, in collaboration with the National Trust, and to work in partnership with Ikon gallery and the Canal & River Trust, as the canal offers a wonderful, peaceful route between the Barber and Ikon, away from the busy roads.’

Lizzie Hatchman, Birmingham and Black Country Properties Manager, National Trust, added: ‘The visitor gets to experience the fantastic landscapes brought to life in our Birmingham galleries and then gets to step outside and explore the places that give us so much pleasure and have inspired some of our greatest artists across the years.’
