Photographs in Urban Coffee

Local landmarks and classic cameras make for a great exhibition.

Victoria Square – by Graham Stubbs

A recent exhibition in Urban Coffee in the Jewellery Quarter has received a great response for Birmingham based photographer Graham Stubbs.  People loved the photographs and the way they fit into the coffee shop.  Images of local landmarks, including St Philip’s Cathedral in “Pigeon Park” and Anthony Gormley’s sculpture in Victoria Square, were particular hits.  Other photographs include mountain landscapes in Scotland and a pair of minimalist images of trees.

But there is something that makes this work a little unusual; many of Graham’s cameras are much older than he is – the oldest going back to the 1920s.  He also uses black & white film, but isn’t stuck in the past, combining these classic cameras with the latest in digital printing.  The pictures on show are printed on textured water colour paper.  This gives them a timeless artistic look, which really makes them stand out from a lot of other photographic prints.

Graham said “I love finding beauty in what I see around me every day, from the more obvious rural landscapes to the heart of this city.  Using these classic cameras just adds to the fun”.

Graham has had several exhibitions before in Birmingham. More of his work will be seen in Cafe Ort. in Moseley and St Martin’s in the Bulling next year.

The exhibition at Urban Coffee runs until the end of August. See his website here
