Local student named as Olympic Torchbearer

Daniel Bird, a learner at Queen Alexandra College (QAC) has been named as one of the 8000 inspirational people to carry the Olympic Flame as it journeys throughout the UK.

Daniel, who is Autistic, will carry the torch for 300 metres on Sunday 24th June in Marsh (near Huddersfield), as it completes the route from Salford to Leeds. The 20year old, who is originally from Manchester, has been studying BTEC Level 3 in Sport & Recreation at Queen Alexandra College, Harborne, for two years and was this year selected as Student Ambassador for the College. This requires that he meet and greet visitors to QAC and assist with tours of the campus to potential learners and their families.

College Vice Principal, Beverley Jessop, said “We are all so proud of Dan. He is a wonderful role model to our learners and is a credit to the College. Dan has not let his diagnosis of Autism hold him back and he constantly strives to achieve success in all that he does. He is a kind and caring young man, who is extremely passionate about sport, and there is no better reward for his efforts than to be selected as an Olympic Torchbearer. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity and we are thrilled for him.”

Daniel is a keen runner and recently completed the Greater Manchester Marathon in 2hrs 57minutes – a fantastic achievement considering the adverse weather conditions on the day. Daniel ran to raise funds for the Challenging Behaviour Foundation which has helped his brother Aiden who has severe learning difficulties. His current total stands in excess of £1000.

Daniel said “I am really excited to have been selected as a torchbearer. When I found out, I immediately burst into tears and I was in total shock. I really can’t wait until 24th June.”

Queen Alexandra College is a College for young people aged 16-25yrs who have disabilities. Entry level courses are on offer as well as BTEC qualifications.
