Local heritage attraction turns the clocks back to 1912

Visitors to Winterbourne House and Garden will be invited to step back in time on Saturday 26th May, with a family event full of entertainment that evokes the Edwardian age.

The house and garden have been lovingly restored to their early 20th century glory. With the added addition of costumed actors dotted around the place, visitors may be mistaken for feeling that they have opened a door to 1912!

From Punch and Judy performances to Magic Lantern shows, Swing Boats to Morris Dancing, Croquet to Afternoon tea and plenty more besides, there will be lots to see and do for every generation of the family.

Staff from Cadbury Research Library: Special Collections at the University of Birmingham will be on hand in the Old Kitchen to talk to visitors about Edwardian food. With recipes to take away, original cookery manuals to look at and activities for children to learn about what people ate 100 years ago, history will come to life. The Housekeeper may even let well-behaved visitors try some of the dishes waiting to be served!

Jenny Childs an Archivist from the University’s Cadbury Research Library said ‘We were delighted to be a part of this event as it’s an opportunity to share some of the fascinating texts we have in our collection here at the University alongside some real examples of the food of the Edwardian period, true to their original recipes. With such a variety of activities including ours taking place inside, even the changeable May weather won’t ruin this wonderful day out.’

A village fete style competition will be taking place in the house where entrants will be competing to win a range of prizes from Gym memberships to a family pass to the Black Country Living Museum. Categories ranging from Best Victoria Sponge to Best Chutney will be presided over by a judging panel including renowned gardener and journalist Alys Fowler.

Doors open at 11am sharp with last entry to the event at 4.30pm.

Tickets are available on the day and are priced at £6 for adults and £4 for concessions, students and children. Children under 5 gain free entry.
