Hip Hope Hero

The Hip Hope Hero knows the world’s biggest secret…that inside everyone lurks a hero, even a super hero! Come and meet the Hip Hope Hero and soon your very own unique and powerful inner hero will be released. Packed full of dance, poetry, animation, music and puppets, Hip Hope Hero promises to be a thrilling theatre experience for children aged 5 and over and their families.

Starring as the fabulous Hip Hope Hero will be South Africa’s Got Talent winner, Darren Rajbal. Darren, from Durban, became the first ever winner of the TV competition in South Africa in 2009 with the judges claiming that ‘when you see great talent it’s thrilling’. Darren is deaf yet he defied all the odds to win the competition with his extraordinary hip hop performances. For Hip Hope Hero, Darren will showcase his amazing dance moves for the very first time in the UK.

This brand new stage show for children is created by Moving Hands and Birmingham Repertory Theatre. To develop ideas for the show the two companies have worked closely with school children from Robin Hood Primary School and Longwill School for the Deaf in Birmingham and also Hawston Primary Western Cape in South Africa.  Directing the show is Steve Johnstone with puppetry by Caroline McDowell and featuring Alison Belbin as storyteller and performer.

Moving Hands is a visual theatre company producing innovative and original shows for family audiences. Their performances combine puppetry, mask, mime, physical theatre, dance, animation, projection and drama and they also have a long history of working with artists and theatre practitioners in South Africa. Moving Hands and Birmingham Repertory Theatre have previously collaborated on family shows, The Ugly Eagle and The Emperor’s New Machine based on Hans Christian Andersen’s story, The Emperor’s New Clothes.

Birmingham Repertory Theatre is one of the UK’s leading producing theatres. Founded nearly 100 years ago, the company will celebrate is centenary in 2013.
