As a member of esteemed photojournalism collective Magnum Photos since 1998, Bruce Gilden grew up in Brooklyn, New York where he still resides, and became firmly ensconced in the pantheon of New York City street poets through his unique style of confrontational photography and exuberant vision in observing urban behaviour and customs. Named after Le Corbusier’s term for the unique metropolis of New York, “a beautiful catastrophe”, the exhibition highlights Gilden’s fascination with everyday life on the streets with spontaneous images created with the use of a stark flash alerting passers by to his presence.
Curator Kathryn Kliszat said, “We are proud to be hosting this prestigious exhibition by such a leading international artist as Bruce Gilden. We are also excited to be flying Bruce over from New York for his talk at the launch event and the photography workshop which he will be delivering which will give our visitors an exclusive insight into his 25-year body of street work.”
