Sutton Park lake warning

Visitors to Sutton Park have been warned to keep their pets out of the water after tests showed higher than usual levels of potentially toxic blue-green algae in two pools.

Keepers Pool in happier times

In partnership with the Environment Agency, parks staff regularly monitor the water in pools and lakes across the city and have found increased levels of the algae in Blackroot and Keepers Pools.

Blue-green algae (Cynobacteria) occurs naturally in rivers, ponds, estuaries and the sea. It produces toxins which can be fatal for animals and cause sickness and muscle pain in humans.

Warning signs have been erected at both pools.
