The Fairtrade Association Birmingham (FAB) is planning to host a series of events and activities to promote Birmingham as the leading fair trade city of the world.

From February 28th until March 12th there will be a programme to include the young and not so young: A tea dance for 400 old-timers, school children visiting the city centre’s Shared Earth Store, a swing band at a cricket club and saucy underwear on show at Birmingham Cathedral.

The fortnight starts with schoolchildren from across the city being invited to Co-Op stores to learn about Fairtrade.

The main event takes place at St Philip’s Cathedral on March 2nd when members of the public can attend “Blood, Sweat and Traffic”; a fashion show featuring Fairtade clothing, speakers and Fairtrade refreshments. 7.30pm until 9.30pm.

Fairtrade wine is on offer at Birmingham University on March 3rd when students and staff are holding their fifth wine tasting.

Around 400 Members of Midlands Co-Operative Society are preparing to strut their stuff on Friday 4th March, 12.30 pm, at the Tower Ballroom in Edgbaston, Birmingham for an afternoon of dancing and refreshments to raise the profile of Fairtrade.

On the same Day Aston University is holding a series of Fairtrade events on their campus.

Saturday 5th March from 8.00 pm sees Gary Allcock “Allstars” playing swing at Kings Heath Cricket Club, proceeds to the Fairtrade Charity LUCIA.

On Wednesday 9th March FAB is visiting Birmingham City University’s Nursing and Midwifery Campus with a host of Fairtrade stalls offering all sorts of goodies, between 11.30 and 2.00 pm.

The ethical store Shared Earth in New Street is inviting schoolchildren from across the City to listen to stories on Fairtrade on 10th March.

Throughout the Fortnight Holy Trinity School will be holding classes organised by FAB member Marcus Belben culminating in a presentation on Friday 11th March at which FAB members will hear of the work the school has done.

One of the final events is Birmingham University’s Fairtrade Fashion Show in their Great Hall. Starting at 6.30 pm, it promises to be a spectacular finale organised by the students – who have shown such a passion they are holding events on almost everyday of Fairtrade Fortnight.

No other city or town is holding this many events. To find out more contact John Boyle 07736 792518
