Grants worth £1.2 million for postgraduate study.

Individual grants worth £10,000 are being offered to students from under-represented groups who want to study Masters degree courses starting later this year at the University of Warwick.

The cash, which has been co-funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England and totals around £1.2 million, is equivalent to at least 125 scholarships.

Students can apply for the scheme from now until 31 March 2015 and it is open to anyone who is currently taking an undergraduate degree at a UK university.

Professor Christina Hughes, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Teaching and Learning, said: “It’s great that we‘ve been awarded the funding needed to offer this programme and that we can again widen the participation for masters level study. The grants will deliver serious benefits for students who, without the financial support, would otherwise not have the opportunity to study at this level.”

Kara Sabera, who is currently studying for a Masters in History after gaining a scholarship last year, said: “As a mother of three taking on a part time job to fund my degree would mean that I would not have much time to focus on my research and family life. The scholarship has given me that time to enable me to carry out my work to the best of my ability, helping me to balance my time devoted to my studies and family life.”

Another student said: “Coming from a very low income single parent family, this is an opportunity I could not take without the help of this award. I really cannot emphasise enough how life-changing this Masters degree would be for me.”
