Taskforce offers help to Erdington residents

Taskforce continues support through lockdown.

Since the Government’s announcement of the latest lockdown, the Erdington COVID-19 Taskforce has redoubled its efforts to support the district’s elderly, isolated and vulnerable.

Established last April, the Taskforce has supported thousands of people with hundreds of local residents mobilised to deliver tens of thousands of food parcels and essential supplies to homes across the constituency while hundreds of support activities have also been delivered to connect and engage with people adversely affected by the pandemic.

The Taskforce is facilitated by Witton Lodge Community Association. Chief Officer, Afzal Hussain, said the new lockdown is refocusing the groups’ efforts.

“Reaching out to our vulnerable and elderly residents has never been more critical,” he said. “The level of support, care and provision they need during these unprecedented times demands a co-ordinated and strategic response that is locally rooted. By working together the 40 local organisations of the Taskforce are continuing to make a real impact.”

Over the last eight months the Erdington Taskforce brings has mobilised and army of volunteers to ensure wherever there is need, those needs have been met. This has included packing and delivering food parcels, providing health and wellbeing support, advice and guidance on finance and housing matters and assisting with daily tasks like shopping, cleaning and cooking.

“As a community, Erdington has responded brilliantly to the issues and fallout from the Coronavirus pandemic,” added Afzal.

“Our focus remains on reaching and supporting those who have been identified as being vulnerable and most at risk; particularly the elderly and those living with urgent medical conditions.”

The Taskforce has developed several workstreams and co-ordinates resources to provide essential support services and carry out tasks and activities, where required, across the district.
