The virus that keeps on giving

A stress-relieving rant courtesy of Andy Munro.

My daughter lives in France and say’s she’s been impressed by the honesty of Emmanuel Macron, who admits the French government got some of their responses wrong. Compare that to our shambolic bunch (both NHS and government representatives) whose weasly words don’t even the approach an apology.

My questions to them are:

Why show misleading graphs which compare us with other countries but not on a like for like basis? If there’s a delay in gathering stats from outside the hospitals then why not be open and honest and republish those ‘trend’ graphs retrospectively updated?

If vital workers aren’t getting PPE is it because of lack of supplies, inadequate logistics or poor management. Every hospital and care home that needs the equipment must know what they need per week so what is the reason they’re not getting what they need?

On the basis that we instituted this lockdown (and one which anyway is a bit half-soaked in comparison to those in most EU countries) two or three weeks too late; is the same belated implementation going to happen with regards to equipping everybody with face masks? This, in the light of sage advice that’s now emerged and been implemented by a number of countries already. On this point I noticed our local dustcart today had three blokes in fluorescent jackets crammed into the cab without PPE. Either a shortage of supplies, or dustman machismo?

Having said all this, I listen with despair when at the daily briefings the press corps ask stupid questions such as, “When is the lockdown going to be eased?” How the hell can we tell at the moment and I for one don’t want to spend weeks in lockdown for it to be prematurely ended and the whole fiasco to start again.

Alternatively, the questions to the Chancellor of the Exchequer (by far the most impressive on the top rostrums, incidentally) about the economic implications and its ‘disastrous’ effects. Don’t the thickhead media realise that we’re all in the same boat across the world so generally, we’ll all be starting from the same position.

The whole saga is desperate and made even more so by the stupid media, a generally incompetent, slow-acting government and supporting medical team.

End of rant….

  1. You talk about ‘a slow acting government’: I think it actively put its collective head in the ground to delay delay and delay because no one was making practical decisions in the run up to the viral onslaught re testing, vaccination and, horribly, the simple purchase of life saving PPE gear for front line staff. This despite a collective warning from medical experts who dismissed that ludicrous herd immunity canard
