Erdington COVID-19 task force launched

Help organised for elderly and vulnerable residents.

With the threat posed by COVID-19, organisations and individuals are being mobilised across Erdington to support its elderly and vulnerable residents.

An Emergency Assets Register has been compiled which currently lists eighteen groups and numerous volunteers who are ready to take up the call for co-ordinating and delivering services to those in need.

These include setting up community foodbanks in local wards, distributing food and household supplies, collecting medical prescriptions and providing bespoke befriending support, advice and guidance.

Witton Lodge Community Association is working in conjunction with the Erdington COVID-19 Taskforce to rally local organisations and residents to the cause.

Chief Officer, Afzal Hussain, said: “Reaching vulnerable residents has never been more critical. We need to ensure that they receive the support, care and provisions they need during these unprecedented times. By working together, we are more likely to achieve this.”

Meanwhile, Erdington MP Jack Dromey (pictured), said the local community has a big role to play in keeping people safe as COVID-19 continues to impact daily life.

“Birmingham and Britain are confronted with the biggest crisis since World War II,” he said.

“There has never been a time when the community standing together has mattered so much. Erdington is determined to stand together, ensuring none of our citizens are left to fend for themselves.

“Our Task Force brings together every organisation who can make a difference, mobilising an army of volunteers to leave no stone unturned.”

A statement issued by the city council said: “We are facing unprecedented times in which we need to pull together as a system to support those who need us the most. This includes citizens coming forward to become volunteers as demand increases.”
