A worrying week

Blues going down 1-0 at Wigan isn’t the only thing causing concern for Andy Munro.

An announcement of a £30 million loss and the fact that we can’t buy a win at the moment even if we did have the money makes it a week to forget – and it’s only Wednesday.

After two defeats which, in fairness, could have easily been two victories, Wigan away seemed eminently winnable. Yet despite some brave talk from Pep Clotet, we slipped to a narrow defeat despite for the first time this season having more possession (and chances) than the opposition.

Behind that score, however, are a few fairly stark home truths. Lee Camp was definitely culpable for Wigan’s speculative winner and maybe now is the time to give David Stockdale his chance.

Jake Clarke-Salter flatters to deceive with a few smooth touches but in the real business of nullifying rumbustious forwards, and with Marc Roberts’ height and power missing, he was bullied too easily.

In midfield Villalba still seems a bit of a show pony and whilst Dan Crowley continues to impress we badly miss a wide player in terms of effectiveness going forward.

Finally, up front Alvaro Gimenez helped create a goal but unfortunately this was in the wrong net. However, whilst he never really made any sort of impact in this game I think that as one of our few forwards, Pep has to persevere with him or give Odin Bailey a starting place. This is because our lack of pace means that two men up top are a must if we are to be a threat going forward.

Let’s hope we get something against Boro to stop the rot.
