Points won, or lost?

Andy Munro on Blues’ 2-2 draw at home to Blackburn.

This was a hard-fought game with little between the sides, although if anybody deserved to edge it maybe it was the Blues. In fairness, Blackburn at times bossed midfield but Blues looked the most likely to score in open play with the main Blackburn danger coming from set pieces and the physicality of Danny Graham and Bradley Dack.

Blues were far the better side early on and it was no surprise when Che Adams threaded through a great opener with the keeper unsighted. However, strangely the goal coincided with Blues going completely off the boil. Luckily Blackburn huffed and puffed to no avail until McGrew equalised from a set piece.

Blues then brought on Mrabti, who showed some excellent touches and was only foiled by an outstanding save from the Blackburn keeper. Then Mahoney came on for the ineffective Jota and Vassell replaced the tiring Jutkiewicz and showed some promising glimpses of power and speed before Danny Graham put Rovers into the lead with a wicked deflection that Lee Camp (who incidentally had an assured game) could do nothing about.

However this Blues team fight to the end and Che Adams scored a sensational goal from the acutest of acute angles to send the crowd wild. However, if a lesson is to be learnt from the game it is maybe that it’s time to rest both Maghoma and Jota, especially as we now have an array of talent on the bench. We rely on width with two holding midfielders so having effective wingers are key and the current incumbents are starting to look jaded and a rest can only do good in rejuvenating them.

The result wasn’t a disaster but dropping points at home is a habit that no team wants even in a topsy turvy Championship.
