Spectacular contemporary dance for the Rep

Acclaimed dance companies to perform on Birmingham stage.

Two leading international choreographers and dance companies bring their celebrated work to the epic main stage at Birmingham Repertory Theatre this April.

to a simple, rock ‘n’ roll . . . song. (Tuesday 24th April) is the latest work from choreographer Michael Clark, described by the Evening Standard as “an adrenaline shot that sends you away buzzing”. A triple bill of gorgeously arresting choreography set to music by Erik Satie, Patti Smith, and David Bowie, including the title track from Bowie’s Mercury Prize-nominated album, Blackstar.

Winning rave reviews for his technical rigour, experimentation, intense and fine-tuned choreography, Michael Clark remains an innovator and defining cultural figure. Collaborating with artists, designers, writers and musicians, he introduces dance to new audiences in unorthodox settings – Michael Clark Company was the opening act of the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury 2015.

to a simple, rock ‘n’ roll . . . song. premiered at the Barbican in London in 2016 and has since toured internationally to great acclaim. The production features performances by a company of fearless and otherworldly dancers, complemented by Charles Atlas’s scintillating lighting design and costumes by Stevie Stewart of iconic fashion label Bodymap.

Internationally celebrated choreographer Hofesh Shechter’s latest work, Grand Finale (Thursday 26th April), is a spectacularly bold and ambitious new piece featuring ten exceptional dancers from eight different countries and six musicians playing live on stage.

Grand Finale is at once comic, bleak and beautiful, evoking a world at odds with itself, full of anarchic energy and violent comedy. Filtering this irrepressible spirit, Shechter creates a vision of a world in freefall, part gig, part dance, part theatre and wholly original.

Hofesh Shechter is recognised as one of the most exciting artists working today, renowned for composing atmospheric musical scores to compliment the unique physicality of his movement. His recent works include Uprising, In Your Rooms, Survivor (in collaboration with Antony Gormley) and Political Mother, which visited The REP in 2016 as part of International Dance Festival Birmingham.

Grand Finale features choreography and music by Hofesh Shechter and is performed by Hofesh Shechter Company with set & costumes designed by Tom Scutt, lighting designed by Tom Visser and music collaborators Nell Catchpole and Yaron Engler.
