Acorns scaling the Great Wall

Head Nurse calls for adventurers to take on the challenge of a lifetime.

The Head Nurse at Acorns Children’s Hospice is calling for intrepid individuals to make a difference and sign-up for the trip of a lifetime

Lindsey Homer who works at Acorns in Birmingham, Selly Oak, is taking on the Acorns Great Wall of China Trek to help raise vital funds towards the charity’s work providing care for life limited and life threatened children.

Lindsey, who has worked at Acorns for 23 years, said: “This really is the challenge of a lifetime. I can’t wait to pull on my walking boots and get trekking for Acorns. It’s a unique opportunity to see one of the Seven Wonders of the World, I’m excited to get off the beaten path and explore remote sections of the wall.

“Most importantly though the trek will help us to raise the vital funds we need to keep caring for the children, and supporting the families who need us, for the next 30 years and beyond. I’d urge anyone who relishes a challenge and wants to make a difference to join me on this trek.”

The trek, which takes place from the 5th-13th October will see participants cross ancient watch towers, climb the ‘Heavenly Ladder’ and even play a part in the restoration of the Great Wall by laying a brick and placing a memento.

Phillippa Weatherhead, Senior Events Officer at Acorns, said “We are looking for thirty fabulous fundraisers to join us for this challenge, in honour of our 30th year. For many this will be a personal journey, but equally for others an adventure of a lifetime to experience. Our first overseas challenge was a China Trek so it’s fantastic to be able to recreate that for our 30th celebrations.”

It costs Acorns nearly £10 million every year to provide their care services and they rely on fundraising and the generosity of the public to fund the majority of this amount.
