Blues no longer an empty Vassall

Andy Munro watches Blues win at home to Sheffield Wednesday.

Before this match, I had a sinking feeling that our one point revival was going to end abruptly against a Wednesday team brimming with attacking talent and smarting from their recent derby reverse.

In fairness, this seemed to be borne out early on with a nervy and lacklustre display by the Blues in the first half. Yet, we still had the better of clear chances, confining the opposition to what was admittedly a free header. Unfortunately that apart, we seemed to have little energy or impetus as Wednesday in contrast played some neat and fluid football.

Thankfully, half time arrived and we regrouped with the players no doubt being told by Lee and his backroom team to buck up their ideas. This resulted in a clear chance to the ponderous N’Doye who should have done better than sky his shot. Blues then brought on Isaac Vassell, disappointingly for a battling Jutkiewicz leaving us still with one up front. Isaac immediately lit the place up with his pace and showed a true striker’s touch when he fastened onto a sublime pass from Maghoma , a player who many of the Cotterill haters seem to have decided to target instead.

Gallagher then came on to look a little more effective than he has done previously although that wouldn’t be hard. Boga departed but he had contributed substantially to keeping the opposition on their toes and his pace is a real asset.

We hung on a bit at the end and Wednesday brought on their £8 milion striker Jordan Rhodes. As a late sub, he showed the wealth of talent the opposition have in their locker but, at last, the Blues defence showed a bit of mettle to see the game out with Harlee Dean and Morrison at last showing some leadership. word about Kuscak who still panics a bit when the ball is played back to him but whose acrobatics put him in a different class to Stockdale.

No point in going overboard with one win but the prospect of Adams and Jota being available after the international break is a mouthwatering one indeed.
