Best-selling author visits Solihull school

World Book Day characters come to life.

Inspired by a recent visit from best-selling children’s author David Walliams, Solihull School pupils brought their favourite literary characters to life as part of World Book Day.

The annual worldwide event had its 20th year anniversary on Thursday, with more than 100 countries taking part in a celebration of reading.

At Solihull School, pupils donned colourful outfits, wigs and costumes to dress up as a whole host of characters from David Walliams’ children’s books, while Roald Dahl’s BFG was also spotted in the school’s corridors.

World Book Day coincided with the 30th anniversary of children’s favourite Where’s Wally. During morning and lunch breaks, pupils took part in a Where’s Wally hunt around the school’s Warwick Road campus.

Teachers also took their favourite childhood books to school to read sections to their classes.

David Walliams visited Solihull School last month after junior school pupils wrote to him with pictures of benches they had decorated on the theme of Our World of David Walliams as part of The Big Read BookBench trail, an arts project for schools and community groups.

The celebrity thrilled youngsters with a reading from one of his stories, as well as speaking at an assembly. He has also released a special World Book Day book called Blob, which is available for £1 or with a World Book Day token.
