Drawing anything but a blank

Andy Munro watches an encouraging point won by Blues.

Nil-nils are not normally much of a cause for celebration but in truth it was a solid and valuable point. With Jap Stam at their helm, Reading are no pushovers as they proved by beating Ipswich recently (Mad Mick v Jap Stam…now that’s a fight I’d pay to see). Let’s face it, Stam was a committed player and who in the Reading squad would want to upset the ‘genial’ giant?

Blues made several changes presumably to give some players a rest and some players some much needed game time. Mind you, with both Donaldson and Maghoma on the bench, one wonders who would have taken the spot kicks. Probably Cotterill who was pleasingly back to his influential best. With Lukas J showing some great potential in leading the line it augurs well for the future.

While not scoring, not conceding a goal will have done our often leaky defence no harm particularly with our first choice keeper unavailable. It was also good to see Fabrini get a short run out but one still wonders if he’s just holding up the progress of Reece Brown and we’re better off cutting our losses.

Competition for places is undoubtedly hotting up and hats off to Rowett for assembling a squad on a budget that would make a Lidl shopping trip look like a day out in Harrods. Mind you, the test will come when we eventually and inevitably lose another game – football is all about confidence and character so those elements will be the key. On that topic, we’ve got one of our bogey sides coming to St Andrews and what better way to cement our recent progress than a much overdue win against the Owls?

They say it’s a marathon and not a sprint in the Championship so, on that basis, we’re hardly out of the blocks but it’s still a nice position to be in , given our paucity of resources.
