Defeat from the jaws of victory

Terry Wills ponders an unlikely Albion loss.

How on earth did it happen?50 minutes on the clock, Craig Dawson powers home a header, Albion were leading 2-0 and with the Baggies’ normally sound defence in operation surely three points were as good as in the bag?

95 minutes and along with every other fan I found it difficult to understand that an opportunity to clinch a top eight spot had been thrown away. Complacency, slack and at times dreadful marking, plus a return to the inability to distribute the ball to a fellow blue and white striped shirt player. They were all there. The manner of the Villa win was seemingly forgotten.

But as in most losing games they was plus points. Saido Brerahino scoring a second goal following his return to the fold. In truth he was the only serious threat. Solomon Rondon was a lone figure with little visible support. He has strength and power, unfortunately this isn’t being utilised at present. James Morrison was again our best midfielder a nd if only he had the much needed creative player alongside results would surely improve?

But for all our failings let’s not forget what a good side are Everton. Accurate sharp passing allied to Baggies old boy Romelu Lukaku on top form they always posed problems although Tony Pulis was justified in his protests the second Everton goal was offside. Win some lose some via numerous slow motion TV replays.

The next Greed League fixture is away against a very much in-form Crystal Palace. It’s a difficult game at any time and with the possibility of a below strength, due to injuries, team on show, I’d be very happy with a point.

Oh yes , before I forget (and wish I could), another mention of our exit from the League Cup. Ten changes, in effect Pulis’ reserve team. Trailing by a single goal and chasing the game the defence was caught napping. Two late goals left the Canaries chirping to celebrate what was generally described as a flattering 3-0 margin
Whether it was or not makes no difference. Albion were out and on to the continuing all-important task of grinding out league points.
