South Birmingham primary schools celebrate healthy living

Event shows benefits of health education.

City MP Gisela Stuart joined pupils and teachers from schools across South Birmingham at an event designed to celebrate healthy living.

Held at Edgbaston Cricket Ground, the event saw representatives from primary schools across South Birmingham come together to showcase a range of activities currently being undertaken as part of the Health for Life in primary schools programme.

The Edgbaston MP said: “I thoroughly enjoyed meeting the children and finding out more about the projects they are involved with. Childhood obesity is on the rise within the city so it’s great to see an initiative which encourages healthy living across South Birmingham.”

The Health for Life programme, which is currently running in primary and secondary schools, as well as in various locations across the community, is funded by the Mondelēz International Foundation, and delivered by the Health Education Service in conjunction with Life Education Centres West Midlands and The Conservation Volunteers.

Dr Sandra Passmore, Education Adviser at the Health Education Service, added: “The primary school programme aims to make a sustainable difference to the lifestyles of children in the area and so it’s important that we give everyone the opportunity to celebrate their achievements and share ideas.”

Kelly Farrell, community affairs manager at Mondelēz International, said: “The great thing about Health for Life is that the programme can be adapted to meet the needs of each school. Today we’ve seen some great examples of healthy cooking, heard about the growing facilities participating schools have implemented and saw pupils showcase their skipping skills.”

Currently in its third year, Health for Life in primary schools is already seeking schools to participate in the fourth cohort of the five year programme.
