Wow – a massive sigh of relief. The final whistle had sounded, not that anyone could have heard it, and together with every Baggies fan I was cheering, waving hands in air, celebrating three points that would hopefully ensure we will still be facing Greed League opposition next season.
West Ham themselves were four points ahead on arrival, but conversely realised an Albion win would not only calm Baggies supporters’ fears, but send them back to the Smoke not in the mood to be forever blowing bubbles.
A below full-strength Pepe Mel’team didn’t fare too well in the first few minutes but then Saido Berahino netted from close in. Jubilation all round, his gaffe in the Cardiff game forgive. M ore please Saido, more PLEASE!
Apart from flashes of danger from Andy Carroll that threatened an equaliser, we should have sown the game well and truly up. Chances created and missed, let’s see a second. Sadly it wouldn’t come and as the announcer, and screens, confirmed that there would be an extra three minutes, I wasn’t the only one thinking…well you can guess what I was thinking looking sadly back at the Cardiff game!
Now three games left, two away – Arsenal and Sunderland – in four days, followed by what on paper, appears to be Pepe Mel’s best, if any (chance ?) of turning his current temporary habitat into a permanent residence next season, lining up against the Greed League’s best, and not a certain team in residence just down the road at Wolverhampton
Frankly I don’t fancy the chances of taking any points from Arsenal while Sunderland are as equally desperate as ourselves to avoid the drop without putting in a massive effort.
If it comes down to the final game then who could be standing in our path other than our seemingly perennial bogey team from the Potteries, Stoke City , complete with a certain Peter Odemwingie?
Could be, but won’t say more, until the away matches have decided exactly what may or may not be required from Mark Hughes’s much improved team. So until then I’ll simply say, as always!
