Accelerated degree created for industry

A two year course benefiting employers in the West Midlands within the manufacturing engineering sector is to be launched by the University of Wolverhampton.

The Bachelor degree level course, entitled BEng (Hons) Manufacturing Engineering, is an employer-sponsored degree developed with the industry for the benefits of both employers and employees alike.

The course will give businesses within the sector the chance to up-skill their workforce, giving their employees a career-enhancing qualification in an area designed to address specific skills demanded by the company.

Sponsored employees will attend the University two days a week as well as spending three days a week in the workplace, supported by a workplace supervisor.

Employees will gain direct experience in using the University’s comprehensive engineering facilities, providing them with practical skills to complement their learning and increasing their effectiveness in the workplace.

The University collaborated with a number of high-profile partners including UTC Aerospace Systems, Caparo Tube Components, TRW Automotive, Moog Aircraft Group and Caterpillar UK in the development of the course.

The innovative course is due to begin in September 2013.

Speaking about the course, the University’s Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research and Enterprise, Professor Ian Oakes, said: “The University prides itself on the partnerships it has with local businesses and the key role it plays in providing higher level skills to the region.

“The BEng (Hons) Manufacturing Engineering course has been specifically designed with the needs of industry in mind, and will support a sector where a significant proportion of the learning happens in the workplace.

“I believe that the programme represents an excellent investment of time and money for both the employer and the employee”.
