Wins and losers

Terry Wills on a dramatic couple of weeks at the Hawthorns.

West Bromwich Albion Hawthorns

No game last week – a perfect opportunity to mull over what could justifiably be termed a crazy, bizarre, unprecedented and even laughable, series of events that stunned not only disbelieving Albion supporters, but in the process generated national media headlines.

Peter Odemwingie’s ill-fated desire –no, determination – to join ‘Arry’s QPR blew up in his face. A humiliating “No way” from the board and Steve Clarke leaving him with egg on his face, a fine of £80,000,and a reported bust up with Steven Reid. It’s hardly endorsing the prospect of a happy dressing room once, if ever, he’s selected by the Albion supremo.

Steve Clarke has done his best too discount negative thoughts:.”It won’t be a problem” (?)  Supporters opinions are mixed, ranging from “I never want to see him playing for Albion again” to “If he’s chosen he’ll have my full support.”

My opinion is that while he’s playing for the Baggies I’ll be behind him 100% – after all what cannot be disputed is that he can and does score goals and surely that’s ALL that matters , whatever circumstances are simmering and hovering in the background?

Almost, if not a bigger, shock was the Baggies second successive victory at Anfield, that generated a DOUBLE over the red half of Liverpool. The first in 46 years! A gritty determined defensive display, highlighted by a wonderful world class performance from keeper Ben Foster subsequently keeping hopes alive that a European qualifying spot was still a possibility.

Back to ‘Greed League’ action  this week. Sunderland at the Hawthorns and if Albion supporters weren’t expecting the victory at Liverpool the majority will be disappointed if another chance of three points is missed. It won’t be easy (few games are) but providing that nothing untoward happens, and the team play as well as know they can, then the Mackems could be the second side to concede six points to Steve Clarke’s Albion.

But knowing Albion……..

Come on you Baggies.
