Resident Artist for Arts and Crafts Gem

Winterbourne House and Garden is welcoming internationally renowned printmaker Sara Hayward as resident artist in a new project; to create an art exhibition about Winterbourne and the Arts & Crafts movement.

Winterbourne House and Gardens

The project, funded by the Leverhulme Trust, will highlight the value and relevance of Winterbourne House and Garden, with a view to create a body of work, a short film and a children’s book to be displayed in 2014.

The aim of the exhibition is to inspire people to find their inner artist just as Margaret Nettlefold, the former owner of Winterbourne, did over a hundred years ago. Sara will bring the Arts & Crafts style back to Winterbourne and will help others visualise the bygone era of the Edwardian age.

Whilst in residence Sara will engage with visitors, staff and volunteers, gaining an insight into the inspirational qualities of the 7 acre botanic garden and Edwardian Arts and Crafts house. Sara will be on hand two days a week to answer questions from visitors about the project and as the studio is also open seven days a week, visitors will be able to see the work in progress while she is away.

Sara explains how she feels embarking on the project: ‘The colours, textures and ethos of the Arts and Crafts era are deeply inspiring and I’m looking forward to the garden rooms exploding into colour as the seasons progress. To have the chance to develop new work in new media in such a setting is amazing!’

Previously she was artist in residence at the Museum of Royal Worcester in 2008 where her ‘Worcester Etchings’ are now on permanent display.
