Black Sabbath and the birth of Heavy Metal

For their latest piece of front-line, immersive filmmaking, VICE have again teamed up with Marshall Headphones for the new season of ‘On The Road’.

Jesse HughesPresented by one of rock’s most inimitable and verbose characters, Jesse Hughes of Eagles Of Death Metal notoriety, ‘On The Road’ is a six-part documentary series exploring the scuffed soul and frayed underbelly of rock ‘n’ roll.

Having investigated the unsung heroes of music – the ‘Roadies’ – in series one of OTR, Jesse decided that for his next road trip he would investigate his foremost musical love – the original heavy metal sound from the UK, as pioneered by his heroes, Black Sabbath in the 1970s.

Jesse plans a pilgrimage to the UK to get the behind-the-scenes facts on how Sabbath formed and what they were like on the road; why the Midlands was such a fertile breeding ground for heavy metal; and how the term “heavy metal” came about in the first place.

Bill Ward and Jesse HughesThe series sees Jesse start his metal odyssey in LA by interviewing the legendary Bill Ward of Black Sabbath, before touching down in the UK and journeying through Birmingham, Milton Keynes, Tewksbury, Monmouth and Gravesend, to meet the bands, roadies, journalists, groupies, designers and super fans who were all there the first time around.

Jesse endeavours to deduce why it all started in the UK, and in particular in the Midlands? And what made it different from what had gone before and why it has continued to influence musicians all over the world ever since?

Buckle up and come along for the ride. Heavy metal thunder’s gonna reign.
