Lady Luck charity ball to turn tables on “unlucky” Friday 13th

Dozens of Solihull charities will be lucky enough to boost their coffers by thousands of pounds thanks to a glittering event being held on a traditionally “unlucky” day.

The Lady Luck Charity Ball will take place at the four-star St John’s Hotel which is sponsoring the event, on Friday, July 13, and guests include Solihull’s Deputy Mayor, Councillor Irene Chamberlain, and her escort, Robert Chamberlain.

St Johns Hotel, SolihullThe evening is being organised by Solihull SUSTAiN, which provides support, development and representation for all voluntary and community sector groups serving the area.

SUSTAiN’s Masquerade Ball last year raised £9,000 and helped 25 local groups, including Solihull Life Opportunities and Solihull Association for the Blind. It is hoped even more money will be raised this year, with more charities benefiting as a result.

The money will go to Solihull Together, a fund-raising programme designed to help voluntary and community groups in the borough.

“The ‘lady luck’ theme for this year’s ball was chosen because of the date, which is generally thought to be unlucky,” explained June Mole, SUSTAiN’s services development officer and ball organiser. “We aim to turn that to our advantage on the night.”

Tony Hill, general manager of St John’s in Warwick Road, said the hotel was delighted to be sponsoring the charity ball.

“As a hotel in the heart of the Solihull community, we are committed to helping that community and we are pleased to lend our support by sponsoring this event. By supporting SUSTAiN, we recognise that we can help not one charity, but many.”

June Mole added: “We have been bowled over by the support from St John’s and are extremely grateful to the hotel. Party bookings from supporters of any Solihull charity or voluntary group will receive half of the total ticket price back. So it’s a unique way for them to raise money for their own organisations and have a great night out at the same time.”

Tickets for the ball cost £37 and included a reception, three-course dinner and entertainment from local band Partners in Crime. One of the event’s highlights will be a “fun casino” laid on by students from the Gaming Academy at North Warwickshire & Hinckley College.
