Apprenticeships not a waste

Twelve apprenticeship opportunities have been created in waste management to support young people into employment and training.

Veolia Environmental Services are offering the three-year schemes in Waste Management Operations, which will teach on the job skills in recycling, waste management and the environment in addition to a nationally recognised qualification.

Veolia Environmental Services, Birmingham City Council’s waste partners deliver the city’s waste management services through a range of waste recycling and processing infrastructure.

Since 1994, the amount of waste being sent to landfill has been steadily reducing making Birmingham one of the country’s top performers in landfill diversion. After recycling and composting all residual waste is sent to an Energy Recovery Facility in Tyseley. The electricity produced from this Facility is fed directly into the National Grid.

The Apprentices will have the opportunity to learn on the job skills at one of Veolia’s five Household Recycling Centres around the city whilst working towards a Sustainable Waste Management Operations Diploma which offers a career in waste management.

Mark Heesom, General Manager said “Veolia have had a key role within Birmingham for over 15 years and I am delighted to be able to announce these additional roles to our team.  The waste management industry is an essential one which provides many opportunities for those employed in it as well as having a very real and positive impact on the environment around us.”
