Erdington enterprise hub meets public approval

Baths site to be converted into centre for business.

Public consultation into plans to transform Erdington Baths into a thriving Enterprise Hub have received overwhelming support with 93% of respondents in favour of the proposals to create a “vibrant community asset.”

Witton Lodge Community Association has developed outlined plans to transform the former public swimming baths into a state-of-the hub for new businesses, growing SMEs and social enterprises, creating a co-working space which improves productivity and connectivity for individuals and organisations.

The Association is undertaking local community and business consultation to test these proposals, explore options and generate ideas to redevelop the Mason Road site. Intervention Architecture is co-ordinating the consultation survey that will help shape the scheme.

Initial feedback is very positive with 85% of those to have replied saying they are in favour of the proposed facility while 67% say they would actively support and engage with it.

Chief Officer, Afzal Hussain, said: “It is important that we hear from as many local residents and businesses on this important project. We know from experience that projects and services are better when they are informed by local voices. So it is hugely important everyone who has received a copy of the survey completes it and shares their views on this project. Whilst we are still in the early stages of planning, this is your chance to help shape the future of this much loved facility in Erdington.”

A total of 78 people have so far responded to an online consultation survey issued by Intervention Architecture. Email replies are still being collected while 2,000 paper copies handed out to residents and businesses in Erdington are still coming in.

One survey respondent reminisced “I remember taking my children to the baths on a regular basis, we also held birthday parties there in the eighties”

Others comments focused on the future: “Erdington needs a community space that recognises the diversity of its residents; a space where events, classes and other community projects could be held,” while another suggested the new hub “needs to be innovative and attract not just local people but people from outside Erdington to encourage growth and investment here.”
