Luxury city centre high-rise development approved

Council gives green light for 154 luxury apartments in Southside.

Plans have been approved by Birmingham City Council to build a high-rise luxury residential development in the city’s Southside.

Essex St (Properties) Ltd will develop a striking 28-storey tower on land at 31-33 Essex Street, on the corner of Bristol Street. As part of the plans, the development will include a mixture of high-specification one, two and three-bedroom apartments, a sky garden and rooftop cinema. A concierge service and a private gym will also feature as part of the scheme, and commercial space will be created on the ground floor.

There will also be a number of discounted apartments available for local key workers. The homes are to be made available for private sale.

Negotiations are currently underway to appoint a contractor, with work expected to start on site in January 2021.

Essex St (Properties) Ltd is made up of the team at Regal Property Group which has developed The Bank, an award winning development of 406 apartments which has been built across two towers on Sheepcote Street opposite Brindleyplace. Completed in January 2020, it includes one of only two residential skyscrapers currently completed in the city.

Glancy Nicholls Architects are the architecture practice behind the plans for the new Essex Street scheme.

Mark Holbeche, Essex St (Properties) Ltd, said: “We’re pleased to see our plans for Essex Street approved by Birmingham City Council, and look forward to bringing forward yet another high-quality, hi-rise building which will help regenerate the city’s Southside.

“Our plans have been created to provide more than just apartments, but a real sense of community. The communal areas we have included within our plans will help foster that and will provide an exciting social element for those that live here.

“The Bank was a fantastic success and we’re very much hoping that we can create a similarly impressive piece of architecture which will help meet Birmingham’s demand for new homes.”

Adam McPartland, Director at Glancy Nicholls Architects, said: “We’ve taken great inspiration from the surrounding urban environment when creating this tower design, referencing the local palette of materials and use of expressive decorative motif. This is a unique area of Birmingham and we’re delighted to be contributing a statement building that reflects its ongoing resurgence.

“We have set out to create a building that provides well designed new homes for a vibrant local community and makes a positive contribution to Birmingham’s ever evolving skyline.”

  1. Good move to have discounted prices for key workers.

In New York, it is a city law that a percentage of flats in new buildings must be for limited income families

    A good move this….
