University netball team creates online activity day

Young children entertained by Birmingham University students.

Providing education and entertainment for 3-5 year-olds at the moment is a challenge – whether they are at home or returning to nurseries that are working to strict regulations.

That’s why EYFSHome, which has been given a government grant to provide free daily activities, was delighted when the Birmingham University Netball Team volunteered to take over a full day’s programme!

Six team members (all prospective doctors or teachers) worked together to create an activity day for EYFSHome. Led by sports science undergraduate Freya Bignell they created activities around shapes, numbers and ball skills – as well as writing and telling a story about their mascot, Rory the Lion.

The team’s takeover day is today, but their activities will be added to the growing number available to all parents and childcare professionals at www.eyfshome.com.

The students who took part are Freya Bignell (scriptwriter and lead presenter), Lois Walker, Helen Carter-Roberts, Ella Flatman, and Kira Rothwell (who plays for England Netball U21 and for London Pulse in the UK Superleague). Freya Bignell comments, “None of us had done anything like this before. Our favourite bit was writing the story about our mascot Rory!”
