Exam results success for Bournville

Birmingham college bucks the national trend with A-level results.

Staff at Bournville College are celebrating the news that 2019 A-level results have reached an impressive three-year high.

The specialist centre within the wider South and City College Birmingham establishment celebrated an impressive 100% pass rate across more than half of its A-level subjects, including STEM subjects such as Physics, as well as Arts and Social Sciences.

Furthermore, 83% of all subjects performed equal to or above the national average, bucking the trends that were announced on the 15th August.

Nationally, top grades have seen their biggest drop since records began. The number of A* and A grades have fallen by 0.9 percentage points, their lowest in over a decade. This year, just 25.5% of A-level grades were A* or A (source: The Telegraph).

Despite this, 18-year-old Abby Young (pictured) was one of Bournville College’s top performing students this year after achieving two As and an A* in English Literature and Language, Film Studies and Media.

Interestingly, Abby has plans to pursue an Apprenticeship within digital and social media marketing, rather than go to university. She believes that taking this avenue will allow her to gain real-life experience within her chosen sector, something that is becoming more and more desirable within employment in this particular industry.

Tina Randall, Head of School for A-levels & Science at South and City College Birmingham, said: “I am extremely proud of the department’s achievements and I strongly believe that this year’s amazing results truly reflect the hard work and dedication shown by everyone within the college.

“We’re excited to see so many students thinking about their future, realising their ambitions and progressing on to higher education, whether it be university, an apprenticeship or even employment. We are really pleased to have been a part of their journey and wish all our students every success in the future.”

Following a brilliant Ofsted result earlier this year, where the college received a ‘Good’ grade across all areas, South and City is now judged to be the best Further Education College in Birmingham.
