Acorns hospice to open gardens to visitors

Children’s charity to stage fundraising day.

A Birmingham children’s charity is inviting members of the public to discover its beautiful gardens – and even take home a plant or two.

Acorns Children’s Hospice in Birmingham is holding an Open Garden afternoon on Sunday 30th June allowing visitors a chance to explore its beautifully kept garden sanctuary.

The event at the hospice in Oak Tree Lane is being held to raise funds for Acorns work caring for local children and families.

Dee McCann, Volunteers Manager at Acorns hospice in Birmingham, said: “Whether you love gardening or are just looking to enjoy some cake in lovely surroundings, this is the event for you. We’ll have lots going on for the whole family including a teddy bear hunt, face painting, plants and garden paraphernalia for sale, as well as plenty of ice cream to cool you down.”

Acorns Children’s Hospice provides specialist palliative care to life limited and life threatened children and young people and support for their families across Birmingham and the Midlands.

The hospice gardens are designed with the children and their families in mind, from wheelchair accessible pathways to colourful views from the children’s bedroom windows.

Dee added: “The hospice gardens are so important to the children and families at Acorns. They provide a quiet sanctuary where families can reflect, a place where children and siblings can enjoy playing together and even provide sensory stimulation with different sights, smells and sounds.

“They enable children and families to spend quality time together outside making precious memories that they can treasure. Maintained by a team of dedicated volunteers, they really are a labour of love and we’d urge anyone to come and explore and help support the vital care we provide to children and families.”

In the past year, Acorns has provided care to more than 270 children and their families across Birmingham, including those who are bereaved.

It costs £7,000 per day per hospice to run Acorns care and services and the charity relies heavily on the local community to fund the majority of this amount.

The event will take place between 12.30pm and 4pm, costs £2 to enter and is free for children (under 16).
