Transforming Narratives project presents photography exhibition

Waterways photographs from Bangladesh and Birmingham to be displayed.

Waterways is a photographic exhibition by Aftab Rahman which links the waterways of Bangladesh and Birmingham as part of the Transforming Narratives project.

This one-off exhibition takes place on 30th April, 6pm–8pm at Aspire & Succeed Offices in Lozells, and will be opened with a key note address from renown photographer and artist Vanley Burke.

Bangladesh and Birmingham are intrinsically linked by water and have a shared heritage that expands four centuries. During this one-off exhibition all the photographs will be auctioned off during the evening. The funds will be used to pay for a water filtration project in Bangladesh managed by Human Appeal.

Photographer Aftab Rahman said: “I was able to visit Bangladesh earlier this year as part of the Transforming Narratives project and am delighted I can share the story of my heritage of Bangladesh and Birmingham through these photographs. Bangladesh is famed for its rivers and tributaries and Birmingham of course has more canals than Venice, the countries share a heritage linked by water that spans over four centuries.

“As part of my research I took over a thousand images, I will showcase a handful of them for one day only at this pop-up exhibition and I hope through the auction we can raise money to support a much-needed water filtration project in Bangladesh managed by Human Appeal.”

Sophina Jagot, Transforming Narratives Project Manager added: “It is fantastic to see outcomes from the research visits that took place earlier in the year as part of Transforming Narratives. Through sharing Aftab’s personal experiences of his dual heritage with Bangladesh and Birmingham we are beginning to create new narratives. I look forward to seeing more work emerge across artforms created by artists and cultural organisations in Birmingham, Bangladesh and Pakistan.”

Waterways is part of Transforming Narratives, a ground-breaking project to establish Birmingham as a leading international centre for contemporary Pakistani and Bangladeshi arts. It is supported by Arts Council England and delivered in association with The British Council.
