International Roller Derby event for Birmingham

Birmingham Blitz Dames aim to continue their international success.

The Birmingham Blitz Dames, a full contact roller derby team have been showing the global stage what they’re made of. After a successful start to the year, the sports team now rank as 5th in the UK, 13th in Europe and 60th in the world.

At the start of 2018 game season, BBD were ranked 88th in Women’s Flat Track Derby Association world rankings out of 350 international teams. Following the success at two big tournaments this year, in Michigan and Newcastle, the Birmingham Blitz Dames have risen to 13th in Europe and 60th in the world.

In April 2018 BBD attended the K-town Shakedown Tournament in Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA and put on an impressive performance resulting in two wins and one loss. After success in the USA, BBD participated in Euroclash, a tournament held in Newcastle in May 2018. The outcome was similar with BBD winning two of three games.

The next big tournament for the Blitz Dames will be the WFTDA European Continental Cup, which BBD have the honour of hosting. This will be BBD’s first experience of organising an international roller derby tournament, to be held October 27th-28th, 2018, at Telford International Centre. The European Cup is a two day event featuring eight of the top teams in Europe, outside of the International playoff rankings. The teams competing have been announced and are;
Birmingham Blitz Dames, Central City Roller Derby (Birmingham), Dock City Rollers (Gothenburg), Dublin Roller Derby, Kallio Rolling Rainbow (Helsinki), Middlesbrough Roller Derby, Newcastle Roller Girls and Tiger Bay Brawlers (Cardiff).

Following BBD’s incredible global success, the team are now recruiting and are holding a free intro to skate session where they will teach you all the basics of skating, stopping and the game of roller derby.

If you would like to skate with one of the top teams in the UK, join BBD for a free intro to skating session held on 22nd September 10am-1pm at Harry Mitchell Leisure Centre, Smethwick, B67 7DH. No experience required. Even if you’ve never donned a pair of skates, they supply all the kit you’ll need and the talented coaches and athletes to teach you.
