Snap up free selfie stick at Birmingham’s first ever digi fayre

Bournville Village Trust to encourage new net users.

Free selfie sticks will be handed out to some lucky visitors at an event in Birmingham next week in a bid to encourage more people to try using digital technology for the first time.

Organised by Bournville Village Trust, Digi Fayre will be held on Thursday 20th October at Bournville Gardens, 49 Bristol Road South, B31 2FR, from 11am-6pm.

The event, which is open to all and is part of national Get Online Week, will promote the benefits of getting online and using digital technology, and quash fears about using the internet.

Jess Allan, Community Development Manager at Bournville Village Trust, said: “While thousands of people in Birmingham use digital technology every day, nearly 18%* have still never been online including some of our residents.

“This means that they’re missing out on all the benefits of being online, from saving money and staying connected to their community to simply having fun.

“We’ll be promoting all this and more at our first ever Digi Fayre and the first 50 people to register their attendance will get a free goody bag with a selfie stick.”

Len Williams, a retired engineer who has just started to get support to get online, said: “I used to feel that I was too old to learn something new, but you are never too old to learn. I am so pleased that I faced my fears because I can now communicate with my family and friends and find out information about a wide range of subjects.

“Learning about digital technology has opened up a new world for me and I would encourage anyone to go along to the Digi Fayre to take the first step into a new world of opportunities.”

West Midlands Police, Job Centre Plus, Fircroft College, Digital Birmingham, Goodwill Network, Rowheath Pavilion, Open Up Digital, Birmingham Adult Education Services and B31 Voices, will all be on hand to offer support and advice at Digi Fayre.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to sign up to future courses and get support after the event, which is part of Bournville Village Trust’s Let’s Get Digital campaign.

The campaign, launched in January, aims to help residents recognise the benefits of getting online and boost confidence in using digital technology.

Everyone who attends will also be entered into a prize draw to win a free digital tablet.
