Event to celebrate multicultural food growing in Birmingham

Locals invited to visit and learn.

Garden Organic and Martineau Gardens are inviting local residents to an exciting free event on Saturday 17th September at Martineau Gardens in Birmingham.

Growing from Your Roots is a celebration of the heritage of growing multicultural food around Birmingham and is the culmination of a two year project led by Garden Organic and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Lottery fund. The project has collected seeds, growing tips and stories from people who have come from around the globe to settle in Britain. Many of them have grown a taste of home in their back gardens by finding vegetables or herbs that have adapted to our climate.

The event will celebrate the project’s achievements and give the public a chance to experience our rich and varied cultural heritage of food growing. Local residents are welcome to join for workshops on:

• We will include workshops on growing exotic spices
• Cooking Jamaican and Gujarati food
• Preserving the Romanian way

Visitors will also have the change to listen to some of the stories that we have collected, including the child who kept her plot clean with a broom in Jamaica, making mango pickle with Grandma in Lahore and trying to grow karela in Birmingham.

This free event is open to everyone, and booking is not required. It will take place from 11am–4pm on Saturday 17th September at Martineau Gardens, 27 Priory Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham, West Midlands, B5 7UG.
