Three’s company

Upcoming jazz ensemble to perform in Birmingham.

Birmingham Jazz will be promoting another top-line event this Friday when they stage the Woodhead Trio at the Red Lion in the Jewellery Quarter.

This brand new project from pianist Andrew Woodhead gives its debut performance at Birmingham Jazz. Inspired by the Konitz/Haden/Mehldau trio and Paul Motion’s On Broadway records, the three-piece takes standards as a starting point for improvisation; the drum-less lineup gives the three acoustic instruments space to explore nuances of texture, sound and harmony for an intimate listening experience.

The band features two established talents from the London scene: Arnie Somogyi, one of the UK’s leading Bass players and bandleaders appearing at the Red Lion for the first time, and rising star Rachael Cohen on Alto Sax, whose debut album Halftime was released in 2013 to much critical acclaim.
