Star Wars artwork helps Acorns

Childrens hospice boosted by auctioneers.

Warwickshire-based estate agent James Hawkesford helped raise £10,000 for Acorns Children’s Hospice with a special auction of unique Star Wars artwork at this weekend’s Comic Con convention at Birmingham’s NEC.

Donated anonymously for the auction the 21 prints were specially commissioned by George Lucas and signed by renowned artist Ralph McQuarrie.

James Hawkesford, managing director at Hawkesford, said: “The latest film in the Star Wars franchise will be appearing in cinemas next month and that meant that a lot of excited fans were at the convention. Featuring iconic scenes and characters including Darth Vader, C3PO and an X-wing, the prints were extremely popular.

“As estate agents and auctioneers we’re often asked to auction pieces of artwork alongside the properties on our books, but this auction was among the most unique I’ve ever held. I’m thrilled that we were able to secure a large sum for this extremely deserving charity which provides specialist round the clock care for life-limited and life-threatened children.”

In the past year Acorns Children’s Hospice has cared for over 760 children and more than 980 families, including those who are bereaved. To continue its care, the charity must raise more than £9 million every year for its three hospices and relies on fundraising for the majority of this amount.

Sally Insley, community fundraising manager at Acorns, said: “The auction proved to be an even bigger success than we imagined. We are very grateful to Hawkesford for hosting the auction on the day and helping us raise this fantastic amount which will directly benefit the children and families who rely on our services.”
