Back in the groove

Blues returned to winning ways, watched by Andy Munro.

You’re only as good as your last game and suddenly things are looking up again. In fact that play off light is still flickering even if a win at struggling Brentford didn’t switch it full on.

It’s just a shame that this should happen as Lee Carsley took charge of our opponents for the first time. Lee Carsley is well respected by Blues fans and we wish him all the best until the next time we meet. However the fact that Brentford (one of last season’s play off candidates) are now struggling, shows how quickly fortunes can change.

For this game, Gary Rowett made two fairly low key changes, as Tinkerman he is not. Davis deserved his opportunity given his display against our arch rivals, whilst Robbo came in for Spector to prove that he can still cut the occasional mustard at Championship level. That apart, the tried and trusted trotted out onto the new, ‘improved’ green fields of Brentford.

The match could hardly be described as a classic by any stretch of the imagination and Blues win certainly wasn’t a tale of sparkling football. Brentford had over 60% of possession and hit the woodwork. However the Rowett version of BCFC is one of resilience and counter attacking and this worked a treat so thankfully no Plan B was necessary.

The midfield grafted hard and this tale of grafting was rewarded when Captain Morro headed home firmly from a corner. Certainly Morrison has to be one of our best signings in recent times and, if only we could find somebody similar as central partner, we might really be in business. Demi Gray seems to be coming back out of his recent shell and,of course a fit Cotterill is a bonus, not least from his set pieces. Ask Morrison!

We saw the game out with a couple of scares although could have added to our tally through Maghoma whose eyes unfortunately misted over again with the goal in his sights. However, last week, we were hit by the curse of the returning striker when Matt Derbyshire scored against us for Rotherham but this week, the boot was on the other foot, as the returning Clayton Donaldson spooned the ball home after a surging run through the middle.

This puts us in decent fettle for a trip to Elland Road, unfortunately never a particularly good hunting ground, apart from the occasion of the Miracle of Nicola Zigic. Still, here’s hoping.
