There’s some prime blues happening at the Robin in the next few days.
On Wednesday 22nd April Ben Poole, one of the foremost young British blues guitarists, will be on stage. Raved about by Jeff Beck, Paul Jones and the late Gary Moore amongst others, Ben’s current UK tour comes hot on the heels of a series of dates across the continent and a live album released in October 2014.
The phrase ‘tribute act’ might be devalued in some quarters but on Friday there’s a genuine chance to pay tribute when Band of Friends appear at the Robin. Led by bass player Gerry McAvoy, this power trio is a genuine celebration of the life and works of Rory Gallagher, with whom Gerry played for twenty years.
Then on Wednesday 29th April the Blues Caravan 2015, Girls with Guitars comes to town.
Italian Eliana Cargnelutti takes her influences from Bonnie Raitt and Joe Bonamassa, and has already gained a fearsome reputation in her native land for energetic live performances. Sadie Johnson is the youngest-ever member of the Blues Caravan at 18, but this Indiana-born guitarist but has already proved adept at interpreting her influences Robert Johnson and Eric Clapton. Bassist Heather Crosse hails from the blues heartland of Clarkdale, Mississippi, and has opened for BB King and Robert Planet amongst others.
