Silver bullets

Birmingham Jazz present another top-line event at the Red Lion on Friday.

Silverado were formed over ten years ago by Bristol-based trumpeter Andy Hague to perform the music of Horace Silver, who passed away last June at the age of 85. Silver’s music is full of blues and soul, and he wrote many tunes with funk and latin influences. Some of his tunes are really simple but always effective, some are harmonically extremely challenging for the players but still maintain that bluesy feeling. Silverado mainly plays fresh arrangements of tunes transcribed from the recordings rather than the commonly played Silver tunes available in the Real Books.

The band features some of Bristol’s best known players. Andy Hague – trumpet, Kevin Figes – alto sax, Ben Waghorn – tenor sax, Jim Blomfield – piano, Riaan Vosloo – bass and Mark Whitlam – drums in what has been described as a south-west jazz supergroup.
