Birmingham Year of Science 2014 is a Birmingham City Council initiative aimed at showcasing the city’s scientific heritage and excellence in the fields of science, technology and learning.

Business Birmingham has designed science-based tours and itineraries that allow visitors to take in all of the city’s key scientific sights and attractions. The Jewellery Quarter and City Centre tours will take visitors on a trip through Birmingham’s important scientific hotspots, whilst the three themed itineraries are designed to let you pick and choose attractions from the city’s historic, technological and natural science attractions.

Highlights include Birmingham Assay Office; the newly restored Coffin Works; Thinktank Birmingham Science Museum; blue plaques dedicated to surgeon William Sands Cox, theologian and scientist Joseph Priestley and Alexander Parkes, the inventor of Parkesine, the world’s first plastic.

Emma Gray, Director of Marketing Services at Visit Birmingham, said: “Birmingham Year of Science 2014 has been a fantastic year-long celebration, with many of the city’s scientific academics and organisations duly given national and international exposure for their pioneering work.

“While Birmingham’s rich scientific heritage is reflected in these excellent interactive tours, the city’s science sector has an equally exciting future – from world leading research in life sciences and renewable fuel cells to a wealth of digital and technical innovation.”
