Life, death and hobbits

Some very different events are coming up at the Light House Media Centre in Wolverhampton.

To celebrate the opening of The Making of Mordo exhibition at Wolverhampton Art Gallery this weekend, Light House is to add to the Tolkien theme with special screenings of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The first instalment ‘The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring’ will be shown at the city’s independent cinema in the Chubb Buildings at 11am this Saturday, 20th September. The second film ‘The Two Towers’ will be shown on Saturday 18th October, with the final part ‘The Return of the King’ on November 22nd.

“This is a rare chance to see these modern classics on the big screen”
, says Kelly Jeffs, CEO of Light House. “We’re encouraging visitors to see the film and walk around to the gallery on Lichfield St to see the exhibition, which is part of the Black Country Echoes Festival. It includes some of Tolkien’s sketchbooks and explores the relationship between his fantasy creation and the Black Country of the 1900s”.

Tickets to the film are priced at £6,90 for adults and £5.40 concessions, and is rated PG. To book, visit the website or call box office on 01902 716 055.

Meanwhile, a global trend of discussing experiences and expectations of death through group discussions known as ‘Death Cafés’ is to take place in Wolverhampton on Monday 22nd September.

The first event will be held at Light House Media Centre, in the city’s Chubb Buildings, between 5 and 7pm, and it is free to attend.

The first Death Café was held in East London in 2011, spreading to America and across the globe, with over 1 ,000 held since. The free community events are not therapy, grief support or workshops, but they allow visitors to share their own ideas and experiences of death, funerals, and ultimately then learn to make the most of life, in a respectful atmosphere.

Lock Works Café Bar will be open for hot drinks and cake, and the event is designed to be free of discrimination where views can be expressed safely and comfortably.

Booking is not necessary, however if you have questions, contact the organiser Kate Spohrer, on [email protected] or 07806301328
