Operation Tom set for Digbeth

New exhibition by 7-16 year olds.

As part of Digbeth First Friday, Friction Arts are pleased to present an exhibition of artwork from emerging artists aged 7 to 16.

The work includes prints, drawings, paintings, and a sculpture made from finger-knitting enlarged to an industrial scale. Most striking is the video art which includes shadow-puppetry, and a film created by the young people in which they read out their own imagined epitaphs.

Visual artist Nita Newman, who mentors the young artists each Saturday as part of Friction Arts’ Art Club, says: “The work demonstrates very sophisticated, even adult thoughts and themes. It is a collection of individual work that presents the artists’ personalities and how strikingly independent they are in their own aesthetics.

“While some of the work reflects the vibrancy of childhood – populated with robots, cats, fashion figures and architecture – other work transcends childhood through visually sophisticated landscapes and abstract studies.”

Operation Tom will be open for Digbeth First Friday on Friday 5th September 2014 from 6pm-9pm, at The Edge, 79-81 Cheapside, Digbeth, Birmingham B12 0QH. The exhibition can also be viewed from Monday 1st to Friday 5th September 2014 from 2pm-4pm by appointment only – call 0121 772 6160 to book a tour.
