Andy Munro on Blues’ vital midweek win. 

It’s a must win game, everybody’s hurting, we’re too good to go down, everybody’s up for it, we’re all in this together. If I had a pound for every cliché uttered in the local media I would have been able to buy out Carson & co.

Usually all this means nothing and we lose again so my hopes weren’t particularly high for this latest Millwall challenge. Gung Ho Ollie H decided to play three up top and just three at the back against us while Blues fielded two wingers (now that’s a novel idea), a centre forward and a deep lying Shinnie. This was balanced by two midfield terriers in the shape of Spector and Reilly so defence splitting Hoddle- type passes were definitely off the agenda.

Right from the start, Millwall tore at the heart of the Blues defence, but at times like these players such as Robbo are a godsend and we held firm despite some close shaves. Then ,out of the blue (or should it be red), Liverpool loanee Jordan Ibe put us in the lead to build on his excellent cameo performance last Saturday. Unfortunately, a deflection off Robbo put Millwall level before Shinnie scored with a soaring header – an occurrence which must rank in frequency with seeing the total eclipse of the moon.

It stayed that way into the second half, when Ziggy, so often Millwall’s nemesis, thundered home a header with the power and purpose he seldom delivers. However, the Lions weren’t done partly due to a fortunate penalty and partly due a period of extra time of which Fergie himself would be proud.

This was an absolutely vital win but I suppose every cloud has a silver lining and, if we had lost, we would probably been looking for a new manager to replace the still unconvincing Lee Clark. Will he resist his tinkerman tendencies and keep an unchanged side for Saturday? Let’s hope so and let’s hope we get that elusive home win to end the St Andrews misery.
