Terry Wills on Albion and old enemies from near and far.

Two questions this week. One I’m confident of knowing the answer of, barring a footballing miracle, but as for the second?

First, England’s chances of creating any sort of favourable impression when playing in 2014’s Brazil World Cup?

Well, based on the two Wembley defeats against Chile and Germany, admittedly two of the world’s best teams, they have little, or no chance. But at least Roy Hodgson, his players and staff will be in the position of
enjoying a wonderful sightseeing holiday !

In terms of technique, Chile in particular were streets ahead- passing, creating chances and whenever crossing the halfway line always had England looking vulnerable.

Germany, the old enemy, and although England did enjoy plenty of possession all the old faults were there. Depressing in the extreme. Who’s to blame, is there a reason?

For me as long as the Greed League is polluted by a never-ending supply of foreign players, denying young home grown youngsters the chance to sample top flight competition, the future shows no sign of ever improving. (Was I really at Wembley on July 30th 1966 to see England win the World Cup? Yes I was. but I reckon that will go down in future record books as the first, and only time, our national side ruled the roost)

Onto the second question – will it be Albion, or Villa’s supporters claiming bragging rights following the November 25th televised clash at the Hawthorns? Naturally both have no doubts – “We’re going to win. You wait and see!”

Looking at it logically, based on recent performances Albion appear to be favourites. But this is a local derby where anything can, and must probably will happen.

As the home side Albion will be expected to push forward, which will allow Villa to catch them on the break. With forwards in the mould of Benteke and Agbonlahor, they can create problems. As a counter Stephan Sessegnon, Shane Long, and Amalfitano can also be a handful, and then there’s Saido Berahino, whether starting or coming on as sub. An intriguing question in itself.

So who will win, providing the points aren’t shared ?

I think it will probably be a game of few goals, thrills and spills, and controversial decisions, but again I’ll simply repeat the old cliché “May the best team win,” providing they’re wearing blue and white striped shirts
of course! Head on the block time; Albion 1 Villa 0, But then Villa supporters will have their own thoughts on the outcome.
