Appeal to give Birmingham youngster freedom

A Birmingham family are appealing for the gift of freedom as they search for the funds they need for a life enhancing piece of equipment.

One year old Abder-Rahman Mustafa needs a car seat worth £669 which will be vital in providing safety and comfort for him in car journeys.  The Mustafa family are working with the charity Caudwell Children to raise the funds needed, but are desperate for more support to continue to help Abder and other disabled children throughout the local area.

Abder, from Stechford in Birmingham, suffers from cerebral palsy,  which was uncovered when an MRI scan found cysts had formed on his brain. The condition makes it hard for him to swallow, meaning he has to feed via a tube directly into his stomach. It also affects his movement and muscle development.

His mother, Raheela Mustafa, believes the car seat will help bring their family closer together and ease the burden on Abder’s five siblings: “The seat will mean so much both to Abder and us. It will mean more freedom for him and I will be able to drive with peace of mind knowing he is comfortable.

“It will mean we won’t have to think about going out on longer journeys. When we are out we have to rush to get back from places, which is not fair on his siblings.

The car seat will be life changing and will mean he can be a bigger part of the family when we are out and about.”

Abder’s current car seat lacks the structural support necessary to keep his posture straight whilst driving. The new seat will fix this and vastly improve his comfort and safety while on the move.

Trudi Beswick, CEO of Caudwell Children said: “Equipment like this is vital to keep families on the move and safe, so we will be delighted when we deliver this to Abder and his family. However we need more funding to help other children in the area. We are always in need of funding to continue to provide practical and emotional support to families living with disabled children.”
