This week at the Robin

A couple of TV stars, and some musicians as well.

Monday sees the first time at the Robin for Davina & the Vagabonds. Described as a high-energy combination of jazz, blues, Dixie and ragtime, the band have forged an enviable live reputation through constant gigging and have been regular on the European festival circuit for a few years with Davina Sowers’ voice drawing comparison with blues greats from Bessie Smith to Etta James.

Tickets £10

On Tuesday there’s the regular Sam Draisey sessions, featuring some of the best in unsigned acoustic acts from around the Midlands and open mic spots for anyone who wants to join in. Admission is free.

There’s both a return and another first Robin appearance on Wednesday, with a rare show by The Voice quarter-finalist Mitchel Emms. He’s played here several times before but this is the first outing for his rock-based side project MisterNothing, as Mitchel is showing that there’s a lot more to this talented youngster than appearing on a TV talent show might suggest.

Thursday sees Cregan & co performing the Rod Stewart Songbook. Jim Cregan was a mainstay of Rod’s band from 1976-94, co-writing some of the songs which made him a world superstar. Baby Jane, I Was Only Joking and D’Ya Think I’m Sexy were just some of the numbers that Jim was involved with. Also appearing in the band is Ben Mills, who got to the final of the X Factor in 2006 despite possessing an amazingly talented voice. Rod Stewart’s said this band are just as good as him and half the ticket price and it’s clear that they are much more than just another tribute act.
