Cream of UK’s comedy improvisers descend on Birmingham pub theatre

A selection of the best comedy improvisers from all over the country are descending on the Old Joint Stock Theatre in Birmingham City Centre for a hilarious night of laughter, thrills, and making it up on the spot – all with the aim of crowning the UK’s top Improv comedian.

Foghorn Improv's Improv Smackdown

On 25th April the best quick-witted performers from Manchester, Edinburgh, Nottingham, Brighton as well as the pick of Midlands talent will compete against each other in a fast-paced evening of comedy games and challenges, all guided and judged by the audience.

The competition stems from a quarterly Midlands Improv Smackdown, held at the Old Joint Stock since early 2012 and hosted by the theatre’s resident Improv Group, Foghorn Improv. As Foghorn director Kit Murdock explains, ‘We started the Smackdown with the hopes of creating an outlet for talented Improv groups to come and compete in the Midlands, but the nights were so popular that people started asking us when we would do a national one! We quickly discovered that there were so many performers looking to compete on a bigger stage, and we’ve found some amazing talent from all corners of the country.’

Foghorn Improv’s Improv Smackdown will be at the Old Joint Stock Theatre on Thursday 25th April 2013 at 8pm. Tickets £7.50, 0121 200 0946 or www.oldjointstocktheatre.co.uk.

All profits from the Smackdown will go to the Gateway Family Services.  Based in Birmingham, they are a social enterprise working in local communities to reduce inequalities in health, education and employment. Monies raised will go towards a small fund we hold which helps clients with a range of emergencies or short term crisis. These could be anything from assisting a pregnant woman to leave an abusive partner, money for food or baby essentials to covering travel expenses to an important medical appointment or job interview.
